Calculation assumptions

What the estimate includes

The calculator combines the selected household profile with published spending data and a simplified tax model. It does not ask about your actual rent, deductions or family circumstances.

01

Household living costs

Nine spending categories are combined into an annual estimate for the household profile you select.

02

Reference tax model

Reference deductions and household allowances are applied before progressive and 15% calculations are compared.

03

Disposable income

Estimated living costs and salaries tax are subtracted from annual income. A negative result remains visible as a shortfall.

Questions and answers

Understand the figures before you use them

These answers explain the source data, calculation limits and privacy approach.

How are living costs estimated?

The calculator applies published household spending data to the profile you select, then produces an annual estimate after you submit your income. Your actual spending may be different.

What counts as a small or large household?

A small household means 2 adults and 1 child. A large household means 2 adults and 2–3 children. Single means a 1-person household.

Can I edit housing or food costs?

Not in this version. The calculator uses the same published data model for each household profile so results remain comparable. The estimate may differ from your actual spending.

Where do the figures come from?

The figures are aligned with HK Talent Engage cost-of-living data, which identifies the Hong Kong Census and Statistics Department as its source.

Why are the figures dated September 2025?

September 2025 is the update date shown by the reference source. We display it clearly because the estimate is based on a dated dataset, not real-time prices.

Is the salaries tax estimate official?

No. It uses simplified household assumptions for a reference estimate. Use the Inland Revenue Department calculator and current guidance for a fuller assessment.

What exchange rate is used for USD?

USD amounts use the reference display rate HK$1 = US$0.1287. It is not a live, bank or transaction rate.

Is my income stored or uploaded?

No. Your income is used in your browser for the current calculation. It is not sent to an API or written to the URL, cookies, local storage or a database.

Use this estimate as a reference

This calculator provides a projected figure for general information only. Published household spending data may not reflect your actual housing, lifestyle or family circumstances. The salaries tax estimate uses simplified reference assumptions and is not a formal tax assessment. Figures are not real-time and may change when the source data is updated.
